Rutledge was born on October 23, 1883, in McClellanville, South Carolina. As a boy, Rutledge lived and hunted on Hampton Plantation with his father and brothers. The book contains twenty-five short stories previously published magazines such as Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and others. They depict the young author working far from his beloved home, the tales reveal Rutledge's love and longing for the world of Hampton, Plantation, SC to which he traveled at every opportunity. Lots of deer and turkey.
