My first awareness of South-West Africa-the country we now know as Namibia-came from reading Jack O'Connor's account of hunting there with his wife, Eleanor, in the early 1980s. At that time, the safari industry was still centered in East Africa. Safaris were longer then, and most game lists included dangerous game. The concept of a shorter hunt for plains game was almost unheard-of, and the southwestern corner of the continent was an out-of-the-way an enjoyable hunt in a wonderful place, so I added South-West Africa to the places I wanted to see.
