Reading these anecdotes, one can imagine oneself in ideal surroundings: a campfire, starry skies, a couple of friends, the call of a jackal, perhaps a lion moaning in the distance, the smell of gun oil, the smoke of the cooking fire trailing lazily into the still night of Africa. And in one's mind, the evening might develop as such: Mike says, "I once had a good old doctor from Michigan on safari with me, and he had an old, nurtured fear for buffalo, which, I later discovered, Jack O'Connor was to blame for…" Or, "Let me tell you about Poepoog Erasmus and the jail at Serenji…"
