A staunch Methodist, Robert Moffat served as a missionary in South Africa and journeyed extensively in the area as far as Matabele in the north. A formidable presence in South African history, he was later the father in law of David Livingstone and his grandson served as Prime Minister of Rhodesia. The documents cover Moffat`s five visits to Mzilikazi (Rhodesia) from 1829-1859 and consist mainly of letters written almost daily to his wife Mary and to the Directors of London Missionary Society.
