THROUGH JUNGLE AND DESERT; Travels in Eastern Africa

MacMillan and Co. 1896 New York, 1st edn, 535pp, many illus, 2 maps in rear pocket. A very good copy with a rebacked spine, one corner bumped, with a long inscription and dated by author. Item #006288

William Chanler hunted and explored East Africa together with Ludwig von Hoehnel who wrote DISCOVERIES OF LAKE RUDOLPH AND STEPHANIE. They concentrated on the area lying between the Juba and the Tana Rivers. Important exploration and hunting work. As was common in those days the safaris lasted many months and the porters numbered in the hundreds. Rhino, elephant, oryx were hunted. A fine production, illustrated with dozens of line drawings of events en route that give a tremendous flavor to a time when much of Africa was terra incognita and only the bold, brave and adventurous would dare to travel into the interior.
