Item #006069 STRAY SPORT. Brown J. M.

STRAY SPORT

William Blackwood and Sons. 1893 Edinburgh, 1st edn, Vol. 1: xii + 304 pp. Frontis + 9 plates + text illustrations. Vol. 2: viii + 293 pp. + 32 pp. ads. A very good set, some rubbing to cloth. Item #006069

Ken Czech says of this set; "In this extensive work combining the author's sporting adventures in India, Ceylon, and Britain, he includes a long chapter on tiger shooting. Brown gives details of a hunt near Hyderabad and includes chapter on measuring the tiger, with notes from numerous sportsmen on the subject. While in the Sivalik Hills of the Dehra Doon, he hunted chital, shot small game near Delhi and relates numerous pig sticking episodes. The plate illustrations by Melsenbach are top notch." In addition there is a most interesting section on the measurements of tigers along the curb, between the pegs and a good lengthy description with data on how the carrying on a dead tiger body on an elephant back adds to the body length measurement. (Presumably because the weight of the tiger hanging on the flanks of the elephant stretches the dead body.)
