THROUGH THE MACKENZIE BASIN; A Narrative of the Athabasca and Peace River Treaty Expedition of 1899.

Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., Limited. 1908 London, 1st edn, A very good copy with a very good copy with new end papers. Item #006060

From the preface; In 1899 a treaty with the Indians of the great Mackenzie basin followed the report of a Senate select Committee, chaired by Sir John Schultz; but, owing to the absence of roads and markets, and other essentials of civilized life, not to speak of the vast unsettled areas of prairie to the south, the incoming, until now that the railways are projected, of any great body of immigrants was very wisely discouraged, and this in the interest of the settler himself. The following narrative, therefore, has lain in the author's diary since the year of the expedition it records." Charles Main was the "English Secretary of the half Breed Commission" (yes those were non-PC times) and Roderick MacFarlane the "Retired Chief Factor of the Hudson Bay Company". A large part of the book is taken up by the descriptions of the birds and mammals in the regions traveled and there is also some hunting by Canadian Indians but by and large it is not a hunting book but rather a book of exploration.
