A Thousand Miles Up the Nile (1877) is a classic Victorian travel narrative recounting author's 1873–74 journey by dahabiya (sailing boat) from Cairo to Abu Simbel. The book captures the landscapes, monuments, and daily life along the Nile during a time when Egypt was opening to Western travelers. Though not a hunting narrative, the book includes occasional episodes of hunting and shooting, typical of 19th-century Nile travel. Edwards and companions hunted for provisions, such as wild ducks, geese, and pigeons, and observed other travelers engaging in sport hunting of crocodiles or desert game.
