A republication of the two-volume first edition published as WEST AFRICA FROM LIVERPOOL TO FERNANDO PO. On the voyage to take up his position as West African consul at Fernando Po from 1861-1863, Sir Richard Francis Burton explored Madeira and Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Bathurst, Sierra Leone, Monrovia, Cape Palmas, Accra, Lagos, Bonny and Fernando Po at the Bight of Biafra. He filled his notebooks with comments on the flora, fauna, tribes, customs, agriculture, languages, topography, history. The author also discussed gold and gold mining, the treatment of dysentery, the tsetse fly, sharks, narcotics, slavery, cannibalism, punishments, colonial salaries, Negro education and last but not least geographical exploration.
