Foxbury Press. 2002 Winchester, UK., 210pp Ltd. to 500 numbered, signed,Frontis + colored plates. Fine set. Item #003976
This is an Anthology of Shooting, 1620-1950, complied from the author's collection of over 700 books on the subject. The book traces how shooting has evolved firstly through improvements to the 'fowling piece' such as: two barrels; percussion; breech loading, and cartridges. Secondly it describes how that evolution had to react to agricultural inventions such as the drill, and the reaper replacing the scythe and sickle. These 'improvements' changed the whole concept of the sport of shooting, from being able to walk up a couple brace of partridge or grouse to driving a couple of hundred. This Shooting Sitting traces the evolution of shooting from Gervase Markham's description of the first use of the flintlock in 1621, to the hammerless sidelock ejector of the late 19th century.
