SPORT AND TRAVEL IN BOTH TIBETS

Blades, East and Blades. 1909 London, 87pp, 25 colored illus, 2 maps, large format. A very good copy with new end papers. Item #001508

The only early sheep and ibex hunting book we know of that was written by a woman. Judging from the photo onset on the cover Lady Jenkins obtained some excellent trophies. Animals hunted include blue sheep, Tibetan argali, gazelles, urial, barasingha, ibex and markhor. Czech wrote "One of the handful of Edwardian-era women who embarked on her own hunting expeditions, Lady Jenkins departed from Srinagar, traveled through Leh and Miroo and into the high country of Changchenmo. Her native shikari thought she looked like a 'town lady', horribly weak and thin,' but she steadfastly continued her journey bagging Tibetan gazelle, Ovis Ammon, and burhel. She and her guides suffered from altitude sickness, lack of food, and severe weather."
