Fergusson details two extended Central Asian journeys based on the diaries of Lieut. Jack W. Brooke on their 1906-07 and 1907-08 expeditions to determine the source and course of the Tsangpo River. After being refused permission by the British to enter Tibet from Assam they took the known route from Koko Nor over the Tang La to Tibet in 1906, and were turned back. On the second attempt they travelled from Shanghai towards Tibet, much of the time in company with Fergusson and a third member C.H. Meares, but Brooke was killed by Lolo tribesmen of southern Szechwan near the Burmese border where Fergusson eventually recovered his body. The three expedition members, often separately during side journeys, hunted for goral, blue sheep, wild boar and Takin. Attractively produced book with lovely pictorial covers.
