HUNTING TRIPS IN THE CAUCASUS

Rowland Ward. 1898 London, 1st edn, 319pp, many illus, fold-out map. Very good copy, front inner hinge good, rear inner hinge weak, sharp corners, bright gilt, period book plate. Spine slightly discolored as is the case with virtually all copies. Much better than average. Item #000897

One of the most sought-after books written on the tur, especially the Western, or Kuban tur. As in his other books, the Prince hunted for long periods of time and bagged many fine heads. In fact the trophies that he took then are still today among the biggest heads that ever came from the Caucasus. Also includes hunting for Caucasus wisent, stag, and bezoar ibex. The book consists of three separate narrative sections on trips taken by Prince Demidoff and Dr. Levik, his hunting companion. The first trip is to the Kuban district, the second trip is along the Persian-Russian frontier and the last trip is to the Kuban district once more, but further East than the first trip. Undoubtedly the scarcest of all three Demidoff's work.
