Cross & Jackman. 1911 Canterbury, 1st edn, 125pp, frontis, photos. The book truly is rare. This copy in very good plus condition; much above average; cloth is bright as is the gilt stamping on front cover and spine. Corners are not bent or bumped, inner hinges good and not sprung/burst. No book plates, no signatures, few pencil marks on front free end paper. An oblong oval blind stamp,1.5cm (3/8 inch) wide of W.H. Barrett, Booksellers, Chichester, on front free end paper. (We recorded detailed notes in our archives on two copies and both had this blind stamp, likely the book seller who handled sales for the author and or publisher, Barrett also was a book binder.) This is only the 5th time in 42 years we have had this book for sale. Item #000743
One of the very scarcest Africa big-game hunting books to obtain; the author mounted a self-guided hunting expedition into the Sudan along the Setit and the Atbara Rivers. Together with his friend H. Leney they obtained numerous trophies including roan, waterbuck, gazelles and greater kudu, elephant as well as others. The book describes the author’s second trip to this region after he had been there in 1902. He borrowed a .400 double barrel and a .256 Mannlicher from his friend Major Powell-Cotton. In fact Cobb had hunted together with Powell-Cotton before and made many of the photographs on the P-C expeditions in Central Africa. Cobb and Leney started from England with the goal of not spending more than 250 sterling each on the entire expedition! Those were the days. They left Dover on 19 January 1910 for Port Said and from there went to Khartoum. Hiring horses, camels camp staff and guides they proceeded to hunt and returned to Dover in the third week of April. The book is illustrated with 33 photos taken in the field by the author and his companion. Research into the publisher Cross & Jackman of Canterbury indicates a regional publisher with several limited edition titles of 50 to 300 copies in the 1880-1925 era. There can be no doubt that this book is extremely scarce and was of very limited printing as it appears almost never for sale.
