EXPLORATION OF THE NILE TRIBUTARIES OF ABYSSINIA; And the Sword Hunters of the Hamran Arabs.

MacMillan & Co. 1867 London, 1st edn, 596pp, illus. Very good with a neatly rebacked spine. Two former owner's book plates. This is the first time that we have offered a first edition in 10-15 years. Item #000224

Baker explored the Nile in 1861-1864. He first traveled to Gondokoro (Juba) where he encountered Speke who was returning from Lake Victoria. He explored Lake Albert and discovered Murchison Falls. Much on elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo and others. Lengthy account of shooting various monsters—crocodiles, bull buffaloes, and antelopes. This book is a superb addition to any African collection. Possibly the hardest to get Baker hunting book, rarely for sale in this, the 1867, first edn. This UK edition, which is the nicest of all early editions, was published one year before the US edition.
