A VISIT TO STANLEY'S REAR-GUARD AT MAJOR BARTTELOT'S CAMP ON THE ARUHWIMI; With An Account of River-Life on the Congo

William Blackwoodand Sons. 1889 Edinburgh, 1st edn, 337pp, photos, drawings, map. Very good copy, with former owner's name stamp; book plate of T. Donald Carter from the American Museum of Natural History. Item #007765

Author visited the Yambuya Camp of Major Barttelot on the Aruhwimi River. Barttelot volunteered for Henry Morton Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition and was Stanley's second in command and he was leader of the Rear Column which was left at Yambuya on the Aruwimi River to wait for more porters to be brought by the Arab slave trader Tippu Tip while Stanley marched on to reach Emin as soon as possible. Because new porters were not forth coming the Rear Column was stuck in the Yambuya Camp for a prolonged period. Barttelot's behavior, in the meantime, had descended to such deplorable levels that Stanley severely criticized him after his return. Werner seems to have taken a "see no harm" approach and glosses over his behavior in this book, possibly because Barttelot died while still in the Congo and he did not want to cause a scandal for the family.
