Tibetan Tales is a collection of the most exquisite Buddhist tales from the ancient annals of Tibetan literature. Painstakingly collected by those devoted to the study of eastern literature and finally given the shape of this book by the author. This collection is not just the work of one man but the culmination of several adventurers from central and eastern Europe. The main text has been collected from the monasteries of Mongolia, Tibet and the border areas of Ladakh now a part of present day India. These texts had long been the prized possessions of the Lamas in isolated temples. The introduction gives a detailed account of the text now known as the Bha'gyur and the parts played by Anton von Schiefner (1817-79) and William Ralston Sheddon Ralston (1828-89) in its editing and translation. It also analyses the Tibetan tales in the context of other world folk stories.
