Initially arriving in Cape Town the author wanted to undertake an expedition to Angola to collect specimens for a US museum but got embroiled in Mashona and Matabele uprisings in Southern Rhodesia. His Angola plans severely curtailed he only a hippo there but once he entered Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and had partaken in the skirmishes he got to work and bagged roan, impala, sable, kudu and others. Then along the Angwa River he bagged buffalo, rhino and lion.
