KARAMOJO SAFARI

Harcourt. 1949 New York, 288pp, endpaper maps. Fine in Very Good jacket. Item #000328

Account of Walter Bell's 4th expedition into Karamojo (now Uganda & Kenya) in the late 1890s when it was still completely unknown to Western man. Bell went on a 14-month safari and shot 180 tuskers and he brought back 18,762 lbs. of ivory! Of these 31 tusks weighed over 100lbs each and the largest pair weighed in at 145 and 148lbs. Nobody ever accomplished anything like it. In our opinion this is one of the finest narratives ever written on hunting the African elephant. This trip netted Bell 6000 pounds sterling in profit.
